Pachamama

Pachamama

The Universal Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth ('The Declaration') was proclaimed on 22 April 2010, (International Mother Earth Day) by the approximately 35,000 participants in the People's World Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth.

I was deeply inspired by this action, and as I began working with images of the divine feminine, I created this sculpture as a tribute to the people who brought this important idea forward, and to honour mothers everywhere.

Detail of Pachamama

The pierced oval shapes reference seed structures that comprise a outer layer and an inner nut. Also included are beans and sprouting seeds. The kaleidoscope of colour aims to suggest the cornucopia and vitality of the garden.

The model used in this portrait is my cousin’s daughter, Quincy Medwynter du Vallon Lohan. She had just had her first child at the start of this creative process.
