Drawn to a World in Motion

The tides of time roll the past into the present. Traces of all that was are left on the shoreline. It is a liminal space and a locus for transformation and mystery.

Cluster

The sculptures I created to suggest this shoreline are loosely based on the symbiotic life forms found in the coral reefs, referencing a nexus of relationships, a metaphor for the human need to connect.

Nestle

Working with the idea of symbiosis and relationship as my starting point, it was my intention to bring energy to these forms through repeated shapes, unexpected lines and contrasting textures.

Nexus

Forms where thrown on the potter’s wheel, altered, carved, pierced then joined together with coils, hand-built elements and textured slabs. After bisque firing, metallic, matt and glossy glazes where layered by airbrushing, brushing, sponging and splashing, creating a rich surface after the final firing.

Merge

After the complex process of creating the forms, then glazing and firing to achieve a rich and varied surface, glass flakes and glass bead were applied with Damar varnish in strategic locations.

Nest

As well as the many layered glazes and accents of glass flakes, this piece also has a few touches of metallic foil which where then painted with a turquoise oil paint.

Gathering

Attempting to create a feeling of movement, clustering and nesting in this form.
