Porcelain Sculpture

Drawn to the tactile language of clay, excavating layers of meaning, reaching into the depth of experience to touch memories of our species time on Mother Earth, the human story is re-imagined as a 3D collage made of porcelain clay.

The repetitive nature of loss and destruction when working with a fragile medium has consolidated my tactic of incorporating porcelain debris into sculpture.   Forms are created through intricate ceramic processes, then combined in an attempt to describe how we can move between the experiences of trauma, fragmentation, disintegration & loss, to strength, regeneration and vitality. On this journey of transformation, we are not alone, but connected in an intricate web of relationships to the world around us and the Others in it.

It could be said that our relationship to the Other defines us, it becomes a basis for identity. Referencing the diversity of humanity in the context of other species, the story I am crafting expresses a worldview that sees humankind as inescapably embedded in nature, despite the impact of escalating and radical industrialization, conflict and war.

As we transform our relationship to our past and to others, the potential to change even this is made possible.
